Hop A Long (aka Ted)

One of the most recent intakes at Ferret Wise is that of "Hop A long" ( aka Ted) who was abandoned at the age of 5 plus years with a broken front leg. A hefty 3 plus pound boy with clean ears, fresh shampoo, trimmed nails and a broken front leg was dumped at a No. NH Vet office as a stray. Ferret Wise was contacted and made efforts to bring him here for assessment. Upon arrival on June 3rd, the shelter vet took him in after hours and an exam & xrays were done. It was decided the surgery was beyond the scope she could provide so arrangements were made to drive the ferret to NY the following day June 4th, where Dr Sandra Mitchell would oversee the care along with expertise of a small animal & exotics veterinarian Dr. Factor of Newburgh, NY for this case.

Hop A long spent 2.5 hrs in surgery on June 4th and remained in his first cast toe to shoulder for 2.5 weeks. He was x-rayed and recasted for another 2 weeks. On July 12, his second cast was removed and thngs looked fine for healing. While he was being held in an observation cage Ted mauled and mangled the flesh of his healing leg - partially rebreaking it. It is suspected that nerve involvement prompted his behavior after the cast was removed.

Unable to recast he has been on pain meds, and kept quiet. As of July 17 the skin is healing without infection and Hop A Long (Ted) is able to stand on it to eat. He is not completely healed yet as tendon damage is suspected when trying to walk he puts his weight on the entire forearm and not the foot. Continued care is in process to see if we can get a complete heal on this elder boy. Once the leg has been corrected as much as possible there are pre adrenal issues to deal with.. meanwhile we pray that Hop A Long deals emotionally for a good physical end result.

Admissions like "Hop A Long" can never be budgeted for. He is a prime example as to why an emergency fund is needed in critical care work. If you can help with Hop A Long and others like him, by donating to the Hop A Long Emergency Fund at Ferret Wise, please know your generosity is greatly appreciated.

We do good deeds with the help of many. THANK YOU.
