Attending Frolics, Fun Events & Shows
by AK Drakiotes

Our furry faced companions are FUN to be with and fun to play with.  In enjoying these unusual and devoted companion pets you may consider taking them on a field trip.  A very SPECIAL field trip in fact, which is that of an organized Ferret fun event, Frolic, Show, Festival, Olympics, etc., or similar type occasion.  Many clubs, shelters and other organizations hold annual or semi annual events that offer anything from games & fun competitions to regimented high caliber competitive judgings and shows, and ALL specifically for Ferrets!  Though these events vary greatly in content and in the overall climate, they have unique offerings for the ferret savvy public!  Lets take a look at them and see where you and your ferret(s) fit in!  Our ferrets are wonderful, delightful and affectionate pets, who make great ambassadors and travel easily (mostly due to their small stature) so lets look and decide which events are just right for your ferrets and you!

Fun events, Frolics, Olympics, etc.

Check with local clubs and shelters- many will host and event or two each year! These events have a wide rage and will vary from a picnic in the park to an indoor or outdoor festivity which will likely include fun & games, socialization opportunities, club contacts, refreshments, auctions, raffles and more.  Most will ask a small admission to offset costs however some club sponsored activities may even be free.  The days' events will most likely contain ferret games of play. Which can include events such as the Paper Bag Escape, to Longest / shortest whiskers or tail, to costume events, best trick competitions, Pinkest nose and the list goes on.  These games are all done in fun and everyone wins in sharing the company of ferrets.  Persons and ferrets of any age can do well in these relaxed events.  Older ferrets should always be considered whe travelling to any event as the often will stress easier than the younger ferrets, and therefore more caution and consideration should be noted with them.

Specialty, Championship shows

While there is frenzied rumor of risk and caution to contagion exposures, even those folks who have seen this explain  the ins and outs of careful attending and risk prevention for event goers reflects back to making sure ONLY YOU HANDLE YOUR OWN FERRET!  Do not allowing your ferret into communal litter boxes either , rather make sure the cage or carrier you take has a litter box for your ferrets alone!  This minimizes any risk of exposure to feces contaminated ailments, and minimizes outside stressors to your ferrets ( a primary cause of short term illness in ferrets).
